We are deeply saddened by the loss of the longtime leader and president of Silex Banking Company, John Lovell.
John grew up in Silex and was a graduate of Silex High School as the valedictorian of his class. In February 1956, John enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served until February of 1958. In his free time, John enjoyed watching and playing sports, fishing, hunting and tending his vegetable garden. He had a real passion for teaching his daughters and grandchildren the sports that he loved.
John began working for Silex Banking Company on April 10,1966, as assistant cashier under the guidance of his father, O.Z. Lovell, who was head of operations at the time. Upon the untimely death of O.Z. in 1972, John took over as president of the bank where he continued to serve in that role until his retirement on June 30, 2017. In addition to assistant cashier and president, in his time with Silex Banking Company, John also took on the roles of CEO of Silex Banking Company, chairman of Silex Bancshares Inc. Board of Directors, and chairman of Silex Banking Company Board of Directors. John oversaw two additions to the bank, the implementation of an in-house computer system, the formation of Silex Bancshares Inc. and many other improvements throughout his over 50 years of banking service.
