MIBA Lobbying Report: August Primaries

MIBA Lobbying Report: August Primaries

By the time you read this, the August primary will be complete, and we will have a better idea of the makeup of the House and Senate. There are 51 open House seats and 11 open Senate seats this election cycle. The August primary will decide most of the House seats and all but two of the Senate seats.

The primaries for Senate Districts 4, 6, 8, 10, 14, 16, 18, 20, 28, 32 and 34 are contested. All but 45 of the 51 House seat primaries are contested.

Only two Senate seats, SD 8 and SD 30, will be competitive in November. SD 8 pits Rep. Jon Patterson (R) against Rep. Keri Ingle (D). The seat is currently occupied by term-limited Sen. Mike Cierpiot (R) from Lee’s Summit.

SD 30 pits Rep. Melanie Stennit (R) against Rep. Betsy Fogel (D). SD 30 is currently occupied by term-limited Sen. Lincoln Hough.

The only statewide office open this cycle is the state auditor, where current auditor Scott Fitzpatrick faces no opposition.

On the congressional front, there is an open seat, CD 6, and CD 5 is competitive after the district was redrawn.

We anticipate that, with leadership changes in the House and Senate due to term limits, MIBA will be well-positioned in the 2027 session.
